    Thalaivas to have year-long activities

After setting up the first private residential academy for kabaddi in the country, Pro Kabaddi League team Tamil Thalaivas has gone a notch higher in terms of its contribution to the sport.

The franchise will host a series of on-field activities to promote the rich legacy of kabaddi in Tamil Nadu.  Children’s Kabaddi Challenge and the Corporate Kabaddi Fest, which are a part of the year-long initiative, will take place later this year.

“We had mentioned earlier that we will be doing year-round activities. Kabaddi goes beyond PKL for us. We want to target people from different demographic areas and bring them closer to the sport,” said Viren D’ Silva, CEO, Tamil Thalaivas.

“We felt that corporates and children are a big part of our family. In Tamil Nadu, kabaddi is their sport and TT is their team. We definitely had to reach out to them,” added Viren.

The children’s event will spread across eight districts including Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Erode, Kanchipuram, Vellore, Nagercoil and Pondicherry. While the Corporate Fest is likely to happen in August, the Children’s Challenge is assumed to be slotted in September. The boys and girls who consistently cross the line of success will be rewarded with a spot in the state finals slated to be hosted here.

“We will be reaching to about 150 schools, which is around 15 schools per city. Unfortunately, we can only accommodate a certain number of teams this year. The registration will be done on a first-come first-serve basis,” asserted the management member.

Close to 40 teams, including both men and women, are anticipated to be a part of the Corporate Fest. Professional training will be provided two weeks prior to the event to the registered candidates. “We are reaching out to them with a clear diktat that they must be purely amateurs. We do understand that corporates do play kabaddi here. This is just an opportunity for them to share a good camaraderie among themselves and also get to meet celebrities during the event,” remarked Viren.

The kabaddi carnival does not stop here as the franchise has already laid the groundwork for actions after the sixth edition of PKL. “The idea is to have a 365-day kabaddi calendar. Post the PKL, we will be organising events for different target groups,” he concluded.
