Pakistan bowlers to the fore as England dismissed for 184
Alastair Cook made a gritty 70, but England was outplayed by Pakistan on the first day of the opening Test at Lord’s on Thursday. England was bowled out for 184 as the Pakistan bowlers struck twice shortly after tea.

Playing in a record-equalling 153rd consecutive Test, Cook batted fluently. But wickets tumbled around him after England captain Joe Root had won the toss in overcast conditions at the home of cricket.
Mark Stoneman, Root and Dawid Malan fell cheaply to the Pakistan seamers in the morning, leaving England struggling at 43 for three before Cook and Jonny Bairstow steadied the innings with a partnership of 57.
Bairstow, however, was bowled after lunch for 27 by a fine delivery from Faheem Ashraf and Cook’s three-hour vigil ended when Mohammad Amir produced an excellent ball that clipped his off stump.
Ben Stokes unfurled a few trademark attacking strokes to reach 36 not out at the tea interval with Jos Buttler on 13, but England had plenty of work to do as it looked to move on from a heavy Ashes defeat in Australia and a rare loss to New Zealand.
Pakistan had dominated the first session of the two-match series. Stoneman’s unconvincing international career continued when he was bowled by Mohammad Abbas for four, beaten as he tried to drive a full-length delivery which clipped the top of his off stump.
After tea, Ben Stokes pushed forward at Mohammad Abbas and missed the ball to fall lbw. Then Jos Buttler went after Hasan Ali with hard hands, the ball speared just a touch wider, and it flew off the outside edge.
Shafiq took the catch. When Dominic Bess was caught by Shafiq off Mohammad Abbas, England was 180 for eight. Soon, Hasan Ali and Abbas polished off the England innings by taking the wickets of Mark Wood and Stuart Broad respectively. Pakistan was 26 for one in 11 overs.
BRIEF SCORES: England 184 all out in 58.2 overs (Alastair Cook 70, Ben Stokes 38, Mohammad Abbas 4/23, Hasan Ali 4/51); Pakistan 26 for one in 11 overs (Stuart Broad 1/8)
