A first of its kind shooting academy in the state, named CSS-GFG, was inaugurated by Shri P Balakrishna Reddy, Honourable Minister for Youth Welfare and Sports Development, on Monday.
Chennai
It is a collaborative work of Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute’s Centre for Sports Science and Gagan Narang’s Gun For Glory academy.
It will have three different shooting ranges, 10m, 25m and 50m. The academy aims at unearthing the best shooting talents from the city and training them in the new state of the art facility at SRMC. Its vision is to produce Olympic medallists in the sport of Shooting come 2024.
“We have always wanted to bring GFG platform backed with facilities, infrastructure and world-class coaches for the aspiring shooters in the city. Chennai has a rich lineage in sports and I am confident the city has talent in shooting too. It is just a matter of tapping them. We aim to do just the same and groom them with the help of government, using the sports science support here,” said Gagan Narang, London Olympics bronze medallist.
Eight shooters are currently part of a ten-day camp at the academy. As of now, only one junior residential coach has been stationed in the centre, who will take care of all the basic-level courses. Three national coaches will keep travelling to and fro and will hold a camp for aspirants from Tamil Nadu.
World record holder Elavenil Valarivan, who is also part of the GFG’s Gujarat venture, was felicitated during the inaugural event.
