The late strike from Romario and a goal from Edwin Sydney Vanspaul helped CCFC take home three points after it was at the receiving end of a 0-5 drubbing against the Hindustan Eagles in its previous game. Chennai City had its chances in the first half but failed to pounce on it as both teams failed to break the deadlock at the end of 45 minutes. Few minutes into the second half, Chennai Customs had a chance to open its account but a charging CCFC goalkeeper Vigneswaran defended it neatly despite being out of his box.
Chennai City made use of its chance in the 55th minute as Edwin Sydney slotted the ball from the arc, just outside the 18-yard-box.
Maruthu Pandian equalised for Customs, converting a freekick which was right outside the box. He hit the ball into the top left corner, getting it past Vigneswaran who jumped to his right. CCFC kept mounting pressure on its opposition with some swift interplay and intricate passing.
Targeting a winner, CCFC managed to get it in the dying moments of the game as Romario put the ball past Arun Pradap, who was out of position. Edwin was the named as the Man of the Match. Chennai City coach Sathish appeared satisfied with his side’s performance. “We lost our last game 0-5 and to come back with such a performance shows the character of the boys.
We are not worried about the table right now. All we are looking for is to improve our performance game by game,” said Sathish. “Some players certainly do have the potential to feature in the I-League team. We are working on the strategies along with our coaches and our scout,” he added. In another match, Indian Bank thrashed Arrows FC 7-0.
