The match ended 1-1 at 90 minutes and in the 30 minutes of extra-time that followed both teams scored a goal each to make it 2-2. In the penalty shootout, Aizawl held its nerve to convert all its five attempts while for Chennaiyin FC Mohammed Rafi blasted his shot over the bar. By virtue of this win, Aizawl has advanced to the quarter-finals of the Super Cup.
Earlier, the ISL was stunned when Romanian forward Ionescu scored a brilliant goal in the 22nd minute to give his team the lead. He charged forward, faked a shot to skip past Anirudh Thapa’s attempted block easily before sending a slightly deflected effort past goalkeper Karanjit Singh from the edge of the box. Aizawl held on to its lead until the 89th minute when Chennaiyin defender Mailson Alves equalised. Jamie Gavilan’s chip into the centre was headed by Saighani into the path of Thoi Singh who struck the crossbar.
The rebound fell to Mailson, who repeated his ISL final heroics by tapping the ball in.Â
In the first minute of the extra time, it was that man Ionescu who once again gave Aizawl the lead when he latched onto a low cross from the left, got a deflection off a defender as he switched the ball onto his right foot inside the box and curled the ball past Karanjit. Chennaiyin scored another equaliser through defender Dhanachandra Singh.
