    Yuki Bhambri storms into second round of Chennai Open ATP Challenger

    The second seed Yuki Bhambri put up a sterling show to defeat Spain’s Bernabe Zapata Miralles 6-1, 7-6 (3) at the Chennai Open ATP Challenger event being played at the SDAT Tennis Stadium, Nungambakkam. Bhambri broke thrice and dominated the proceedings with strong intelligent serving and punishing ground strokes.

    In the second set the Spaniard recovered well and played with much more intensity. Bhambri maintained his composure and the quality of tennis was high. Both players traded a break before the set moved to a tiebreak. The confident Bhambri took command and won it 7-3. 

    The top seed Jordan Thompson of Australia got past Karim Mohamed Maamoun of Egypt to move into the second round. In the first set Jordan was broken twice but he broke Karim thrice to take the first set 6-4. Both players were serving short but returning well. They were engaged in long rallys but Jordan was the more powerful of the two. In the second set he broke Karim thrice to win it 6-2 and the match. 

    The most surprising result which was heartening to the local tennis fraternity was that of Abhinav Sanjeev Shanmugam moving into the second round when Ivan Nedelko of Russia retired due to stomach cramps. Ivan outplayed Abhinav in the first set to win it 6-3. In the second set both players traded a break and it goes to the credit of Abhinav that at 4 all he held his serve to take a 5-4 lead, when Ivan retired.

    Danilo Petrovic of Serbia got away to a good start against Manish Sureshkumar a wild card entrant leading 4-1 with two breaks to his credit and Manish managed to break back but could not catch up. Danilo won the set 6-4. In the second set, once again Danilo broke Manish twice to take the second set 6-2 with relative ease.

    The match between Enrique Lopesz Perez of Spain, the seventh seed and Kimmer Coppejans of Belgium was exciting and exhilarating. Possessing fluent strokes, both players competed with high intensity. 

    At 5 all, Enrique managed to break serve and take a 6-5 lead. He then served out the set. In the second set both players maintained their energy levels and once again with the help of a single break of serve, Enrique won the second set 6-4 and the match.
