    Shivani, Mahesh sizzle on the track

    Sprinter P Shivani and long jumper B Mahesh stole the show as Tamil Nadu schools and colleges turned in a brilliant display in the first Reliance Foundation Youth Sports’ National Athletics Championship in Mumbai.

    Shivani of Vanavani Matric Higher Secondary School, Chennai and M. Mahesh of Sadakathullah Appa College, Tirunelveli were adjudged best athletes in the junior girls and college boys’ categories respectively. Shivani won the 200m clocking an impressive 26.88 seconds while Mahesh leapt to 7.31 metres to bag the gold medal in long jump.

    Overall, Tamil Nadu institutions bagged a whopping 46 medals (13 gold, 17 silver and 16 bronze), the highest in the championship. St Dominic’s Girls Higher Secondary School, Chennai also hogged the limelight as it won the senior girls title. 

    Olympian Lalita Babar, who gave away the prizes urged schools and colleges to participate in the RFYS Athletics Championship as she felt it’s a fantastic platform for upcoming athletes. 

    “The conduct and level of competition is very good. The young athletes must use this opportunity to raise their stature,” said the 2015 Asian Athletics gold medallist in 3000m steeplechase.
