    Deepan, Karthik share lead

    Chennai based Grandmaster Deepan Chakkravarthy (5) of ICF moved into joint lead defeating top seed GM Gareyev Timur of US in the fifth round of the 10th Chennai Open International Grandmaster Chess tournament for the Dr N Mahalingam Trophy on Sunday.

    Joining Deepan on top of the table was FIDE Master Karthik Venkataraman (India). Sharing the third spot with 4.5 points were GMs Tiviakov Sergei (Ned), Tukhaev Adam (Ukr), Laxman R R (Ind) and Pruijssers Roeland (Ned) among others. 

    Showing aggression from the word go, Deepan played a flawless game to outplay top seed GM Gareyev Timur. 

    The Sicilian Dragon game lasted 30 moves. Five more rounds remain in this 267 player Swiss tournament that concludes on January 25.
