Aiming to seal a spot in the state side: Aravind

Aravind Swaminathan, who hogged the limelight by scalping nine wickets in a Thiruvallur DCA Championship league match, is confident of catching the state selectors' eyes with impressive performances in his upcoming endeavours.

"I am focussed on performing well in the rest of the games and I am preparing myself to give a shot for a spot in the state’s (Tamil Nadu) Under-23 team,” asserted Aravind.

Aravind’s stunning spell of nine for 29, which also includes a hat-trick, reduced Classic CC to a measly total of 56 as its batsmen succumbed to his breath-taking pace bowling display. Commenting on how he managed to achieve such a feat, he said, “I was defensive-minded initially. I just stuck to my basics of bowling in the right areas. I was confident enough that if I executed my plans well, it would turn out to be my day.”

The Ebenezer CA-man required little help from his teammates as seven out of his nine wickets didn’t demand a role from his fielders. His nine-wicket haul included two catches, three bowled and four lbw’s. The local lad made the opposition batsmen dance to his tune as he exploited the favourable conditions at the Gojan School of Business and Technology Ground.

“The wind and the conditions helped me deliver my best-ever bowling figures. Once I got some purchase off the wicket, I knew I had the opportunity to run through their batting line-up. Once they started to lose wickets in a cluster, their morale was obviously a bit down. It just helped me in dismantling the lower order batsmen,” added Aravind, a final year B.Sc Comp. Science student at the Vivekananda College, Mylapore.

The 20-year-old presently trains under the trio of Arulmurugan, Elangovan and Prakash in the VS Cricket Academy while on district duty he remains under the tutorship of Bala Prathap and Srikanth.

The right-arm medium pacer idolises India’s swing master Bhuvneshwar Kumar as he believes himself to be of the same kind. “I can swing the ball both ways and I consistently clock speeds of around 110 km/hr. According to my friends (with who I play in the street), I am gifted with a beautiful action. Such small pieces of motivation have helped me in making strides over the past few years,” he signed off.
