National champion Khazima credits dad for his efforts

“My dad (Mahaboob Basha) has backed me through my thick and thin. Even though I am supported by the Tamil Nadu Carrom Association, a lot of credits will have to go to him as he remains behind the scene,” she was appreciative of his contribution. Khazima, who took to the game at the age of seven, found an instant attachment with it after watching her neighbours play alongside her dad. 

“A few of my father’s friends used to gather outside our house to play a game of carrom. That is when I got familiarised with the sport. I slowly started to garner interest for it and now, half of my time revolves around it,” said the student of the Corporation High School, Old Washermenpet. The Chennai-born girl was also presented with a carrom board for her showing in Mumbai by the state association. 

When queried about her training sessions, the local lass said, “I wake up at four in the morning to practise for around four hours in my house. During my holidays, it extends up to 12 noon. I occasionally visit a few clubs nearby and I do it at times only when I am invited to be a part of it.” The 12-year-old has a combination of district and state events lined up for this calendar year. 

“I am looking forward to participate in a lot of tournaments in 2018. All these years, I had limited myself to a few. My only concern is the expenses incurred during my trips away from home.”
