“It was fantastic to play in front of a sell-out crowd. We did not expect such a good turnout for our first home game. I also got to know that there were some fans waiting outside the stadium to catch a glimpse of the action,” said a cheerful Sindhu, who was present for the Boost ‘Play the Pros’ event in the city.

The 22-year-old was overjoyed to play alongside the kids who see her as an inspiration. “It feels really nice to be a role model for so many kids around the country. When they meet their idols on court, they will actually get to know what it takes to be at the highest level in badminton,” she said in a delightful tone. Commenting on the three-year-old league, she added, “Normally, we are used to playing as individuals. PBL provides us with a completely different feeling as it is a team event. Participation of players from various countries will only make the league better in the coming years.”

When queried about her plans for the rest of season, the World No 3 said, “A lot of tournaments have been added in this calendar year. It is mandatory to be mentally and physically fit. I will have to stay focussed and pick and choose the best suited ones.”

When opportunity knocked on his door, Pranauv Ram from Hyderabad grabbed it with both hands as he emerged victorious in the event which saw the participation of around 30 kids under the age of 14. After a series of trials, Pranauv came up trumps and eventually shared the court with Rio Olympics Silver medallist Sindhu. He was also presented with a chance to train at the famed Gopichand Academy for a year at no cost.

“It has been three years in my badminton career. Representing the country at the Olympics has been my objective since I started pursuing the sport. Not even in my dreams did I think of playing against Sindhu on court,” said an elated Pranauv, who is a class 6 student.
