British Junior Open to feature 24 Indians
India’s Neel Joshi will hope to continue his blistering year on the junior circuit with success at the British Junior Open in Birmingham, England, starting January 3.
Chennai
Joshi, 14, will be one of 24 Indian players and 650 internationals who will be complete at the biggest event in junior squash, which features over 30 nations up to the under-19 level. Joshi won the Cologne U15 Junior Cup and Dutch U15 Junior Open in 2017 and enters the under-15 event as fourth seed, behind top seeded Englishman Sam Todd.
The Mumbai junior said: “The season has been tough but rewarding and the international wins have boosted my confidence. The British Junior Open is the most important tournament for junior players as it has players from all over the world, has intense competition and is certainly the one to win.”
Joshi mostly trains at Otters Club in Mumbai, rates Egyptian Ali Farag as his favourite player on the PSA men’s world tour and wants to turn professional in the future.
Joshi will be aiming to become the first Indian to win the British junior under-15 title since Mahesh Mangaonkar in 2009 and the second to win a title following Velavan Senthilkumar’s success at the under-19 level last year.
