Want to make it to the podium in my home town, says Samita

Chennai squash player Samita Sivakumar, who is currently fourth in the rankings released by Squash Rackets Federation of India in the Under-17 category for girls, is determined to clinch a medal in the Asian Junior Individual Championship to be held in the city in August next year.

“I have been representing the country for the past six years and I am thankful to the government for sponsoring my trips. It’s now time for me to take my country’s flag to the podium at my home at the Asian Juniors next year,” said the local lass.

Samita, who started pursuing the sport at the tender age of eight, got off to a flyer in her career by finishing runner-up in the South Zone Open, Punjlylod, the first-ever event she participated. She then had three cracks at the National Championship in the Under-11 category and eventually came up trumps in her final attempt in 2013.

The 15-year-old made it to the final of the Junior National Championship in Ajmer after a string of semi-final losses in previous editions. Commenting on it, she added, “I finally broke the jinx this year. I knew my opponent (Yoshna Singh) was strong (in the final) and I did give my best. I am satisfied at finishing second in the Nationals.”

The national runner-up made a strong comeback in 2014 by bagging the bronze medal in the Asian Junior Individual Championship in Iran after having a torrid time at the Nationals as the top-seed, nursing a few injuries during that period. Samita remains a firm believer in remaining true to the process than looking for immediate success.

“I will take it step by step. I am not looking at what my end product will be,” she signed off.
