Excerpts from the interview
Do you believe grooming and styling is as important as fitness for a sport person?
Grooming is very important for me because we have to appear on the television almost every week and hence it becomes important to look prim and proper. I personally take a lot of care of my grooming styles. Whenever I wake up in the morning, I ensure to first wash my face with a facewash. Second step is to see if my beard or moustache has overgrown and requires shaving for which I definitely pick up my razor.
Do you think Kabaddi players are becoming more conscious about their looks now that they are appearing on screen and so many people are watching?
Yes obviously, if you notice there is a drastic change from the first season. At that time, no one even bothered to have a proper haircut, grooming was not the priority. But now everything has changed, each and every player has a different hairstyle, well-groomed beard and moustache, they have become pretty much conscious about their grooming regime. The Vivo Pro Kabaddi league is also becoming stylish, glamourous and has very much evolved over the years.
With the advent of the trend #BreaktheBeard Kabaddi as a sport has come to limelight for its glam quotient, apart from cricket. How was your experience in recording the challenge?
Not only me but a few of the Kabaddi players have done #BreakTheBeard. I have also seen many cricketers do it and It came out well for them. These bearded looks make everyone look the same, so we did #BreakTheBeard and got different styles with minimum facial hair. It feels good like a refreshing change to come out of the beard. It was also a completely new challenge for me and I really wanted to do it.
You think your fans should follow #BreakTheBeard challenge?
Yes definitely, I think they should follow because this is something new and different. It is always a good thing to be a part of these new challenges and it is time that people sport different looks which are well stylised.
So far on a personal note how is this season of PKL been better/ worse to you compared to the last season?
The season was very good. In the beginning, we felt that the season is too lengthy and it will become hectic but it turned out to be smooth. Fortunately, even I’m performing well and I am really happy with my current form. We are pretty much working on cracking the playoffs and going on to win the finals.
