Huddersfield's Wagner named Premier League manager of the month
Huddersfield Town boss David Wagner has been named Premier League manager of the month for August after guiding the club to two wins and a draw from their first three league games.
Huddersfield, who won promotion from the second-tier Championship under the German last season, wasted little time coming to terms with life in the top flight after a 45-year hiatus, beating Crystal Palace 3-0 away in their opening game.
The West Yorkshire club followed up that victory with a gritty 1-0 home win over fellow new boys Newcastle United and drew 0-0 with Southampton a week later to ensure an unbeaten start to the season.
“It’s an honour for me to receive this award but I would like to take it for the whole club,” said Wagner, who was short-listed alongside Liverpool’s Juergen Klopp, Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola, Manchester United’s Jose Mourinho and West Bromwich Albion boss Tony Pulis.
“I always hoped we would start well but I didn’t expect it. We are happy so far but like I said it’s only a start and we have to stay focused throughout the season.”
Huddersfield’s strong start has catapulted them to third in the table after three games and they visit basement side West Ham United in the league on Monday.
Liverpool’s Senegal international Sadio Mane was named player of the month after scoring three goals in three league games for the club in August.
Mane’s team mate Mohamed Salah, Manchester United trio Phil Jones, Romelu Lukaku and Henrik Mkhitaryan, Huddersfield goalkeeper Jonas Lossl and Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata were the other players short-listed for the award.
