Great Britain to meet Australia in final as India lose to Malaysia

India needed to win by a margin of two goals against Malaysia to edge Britain on goal difference but a gritty performance by the hosts denied the former Olympic champions a place in the final. 

Earlier, Japan stunned Australia 3-2 and Great Britain defeated New Zealand 3-2 in the other matches. 

The final will be between Australia and Great Britain. India will play New Zealand for the bronze medal match. The Malaysian goal came in the last quarter through a penalty-corner which Shahril Saabah converted with a rasping shot. 

India had endured a few penalty corners in the third quarter but overall it was a listless performance by the forwards that led to India’s loss. India won their first penalty corner of the match in the second quarter. 

Rupinder Pal Singh went for the direct hit into the goal but was denied by the keeper. The match started with a clear target for India. But in the opening 10 minutes there was no shot at the goal. Malaysia earned the first penalty-corner which India contested and got reversed. 

Overall, India did not string together passes and could not push Malaysia back. The hosts enjoyed a lot of support from the spectators.
