    Venus-Sitak win doubles for New Zealand

    Michael Venus and Artem Sitak won the doubles against Leander Paes and Vishnu Vardhan to reduce India’s lead to 2-1 in the Davis Cup match against New Zealand here on Saturday. The reverse singles will be played on Sunday.

    The Kiwi pair won 3-6, 6-3, 7-6, 6-3. Powerful serve by Vishnu which led to an ace helped India win the first game. Artem Sitak held serve to make it 1-1 in first set. Paes served well and Vishnu looked sharp at the net as India led 2-1 in first set. 

    A good return and a lucky ball off the net cord helped Leander-Vishnu earn two break points to make it 4-2. Vishnu sealed the first set (6-3) for India with an ace. 

    The Kiwis gave a strong reply as they got into a rhythm in the second set. The Kiwis ran up a god lead in the second set and won it 6-3. Vishnu held his serve in first game of third set though the Kiwis had put him under some pressure. India earned two break points in the second game but the Kiwis rallied to equalise. Leander served well before hitting a nice winner off a return to give India a 2-1 lead I the third set. But the visitors fought well to win the tiebreak and then marched on to win the fourth set 6-3 to keep the rubber alive.
