Rohan Bopanna-Jeevan win doubles title
Rohan Bopanna and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan beat Purav Raja and Divij Sharan 6-3, 6-4 to win the doubles title in an all-Indian final at the Chennai Open on January 8.
Chennai
Bopanna and Jeevan became the first Indian pair to win the title in South Asia’s only ATP tournament since 2011 after Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes. The crowd had plenty to cheer as local lad Jeevan was playing in his first ATP Tour final. The pair started off on a strong note taking the lead until Raja and Divij fought back to 3-3. Bopanna and Jeevan were in the driving seat throughout the match, with excellent coordination and Bopanna’s excellent serve and excellentl returns kept them ahead of Divij and Raja. Raja and Divij came a tad stronger in the second set taking the lead until Bopanna and Jeevan broke their run. They gave very few chances to the opposition while making the most of the opportunities. A host of unforced errors and series of double faults couldn’t do anything good for Divij and Raja as they lost the plot to surrender the match.
