Mukund, Indrajith keep Tamil Nadu afloat
Though they conceded a first-innings lead, Tamil Nadu did not give up their fight against Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy semifinal on January 4.

Abhinav Mukund and Baba Indrajith slammed centuries to help TN stay alive with an outside chance forcing a result. On the fourth day, Mumbai ended at 5 for no loss after Tamil Nadu declared on 356 for 6, setting a target of 251. Mukund reached his fourth century this season before falling for 122 while Indrajith slammed 138 to lift their side.Â
Starting the day with a deficit of 101, Tamil Nadu not only had to polish the deficit off, they needed to, or rather were forced to, bat with a lot more intent to stay in contention. V Ganga Sridhar Raju (28) and Mukund were cautious but they did well to accelerate and take the team close to their first target of making Mumbai bat again. Balwinder Sandhu trapped Raju in front and Indrajith, fresh from his crucial 64 in the first innings, joined Mukund.Â
Indrajith’s presence at the crease was just what Tamil Nadu needed. His positive approach in the first innings had pushed Mumbai on the back foot. Indrajith and Mukund did well to help the team take a 23run lead and end the first session on 124 for 1. In Nagpur, a six-wicket haul from Jasprit Bumrah helped Gujarat beat Jharkhand in the other semi-final.
