Coric, ranked 48, started in a horrible fashion when he was broken in the first game by Chung. The 104-ranked Korean ran through Coric’s strategy to leave the 20-year-old flummoxed as he ran away with the first set at 6-3, in little less than an hour. Chung was aggressive and never let Coric settle in his game as he made full use of the court to make the Croatian run around.
Chung was excellent in his service games and both the players matched stroke to stroke as their neversay-die attitude dished out a spectacle. Coric made a valiant fightback in the second set making it 5-5 before being broken in the final game of the second set to lose 7-5. Earlier, Daniil Medvedev beat Thiago Monterio 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the second round.
The Russian, ranked 99, displayed an all-round game powered with a barrage of aces and unplayable service games. Medvedev started on a strong note and his huge serve and good court coverage helped him close points with ease. He broke Monterio in the third game and followed it up with an unplayable service game to surge ahead in the first set.
Medvedev opened up a little more in the second set and dished out an excellent display of tennis to close the match in his favour. The 20-year-old hit eight aces. Kovalik beat Gastao Elias 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the second round.
