South team wins first inter-zone cricket contest for the blind
The South zone team emerged winners emphatically in the first inter-zone cricket tourney for the blind held here on Saturday and Sunday. Chasing 128 for victory against the East zone team, the South team made 130 runs for the loss of one wicket in just 9.2 overs. East zone made 127 runs for the loss of nine wickets in the allotted 15 overs.

Saravanan, who top scored with 57, hit the ball for a six to seal the tournament for South. While the final was planned for 20 overs a side it had to be reduced to 15 overs due to the rains. Three teams participated in the tournament held here. Three league matches at 12 overs per side was conducted on the first day, from which the top two teams battled in the finals. Organisers said that the Tamil Nadu Blind Cricket Association was formed in 2009 and there are 16 district teams. Due to internal issues three of these teams are not active. Last year the district teams were brought under four zonal teams with a few districts in each zone. The best district team players are selected for the zonal team and best from the zonal teams for the state team. The West zone team comprises Coimbatore, Salem, Erode and Karur districts. South zone comprises Madurai, Virudhunagar, Theni and Tirunelveli districts. East zone comprises Thanjavur and Trichy, while the North zone team comprises Chennai, Tiruvallur and Villupuram districts.
