Mumbai grabbed the lead by the half-hour mark when Matías Defederico scored the season’s 100th goal. Krisztián Vadócz sent a through ball to Sunil Chettri and the Indian captain wasted no time to set up Defedrico, with the help of a slight deflection from a Chennai defender. Defederico then made no mistake in blasting the ball past a hapless Karanjit Singh. Vadócz doubled the lead in the 60th minute when he took a pass from marquee player Diego Forlán just outside the box. Vadocz chested the ball before unleashing a powerful volley towards the left post. Karanjit got a hand to it but there was too much venom behind the shot for the Chennaiyin goalkeeper to keep it out. Chennaiyin tried to get back into the game but the Davide Succi and Jayesh Rane lacked venom in the final third as Chennaiyin didn’t disturb the scorers. Mumbai could have scored the third in injury time but Karanjit did well to thwart Dos Santos’ shot on goal from a point blank range. The victory cemented Mumbai’s place at the top of the table with 22 points from 13 matches. Chennaiyin stay put at placed seventh with 14 points from 12 matches. Chennaiyin next play NorthEast United at home on Saturday and Goa away in their last match.
