SPIC chess tourney in Thoothukudi
The 29th edition of SPIC international Fide-rated chess tournament would be held in Thoothukudi from September 27.

Organisers of the event claimed that the event would be conducted at the Community Hall at SPIC Nagar in Thoothukudi and is jointly organised by SPIC and Thoothukudi District Chess Association. The event would be held for six days and would conclude on October 2.Â
The tournament is conducted under medalist and non-medalist category. Under medalist category the players under 1600 rating points would be awarded separately. The entry fee for medalist category is Rs. 1,500 and for non-medalist category it is Rs.300.Â
The prize money would vary according to the medallist and non-medallist category. Top three players in medalist category would receive Rs. 30,000, Rs. 20,000 and Rs. 10,000 respectively whereas top three players under non-medalist category would receive Rs.5,000, Rs.3,500 and Rs.2,500 respectively.
Arise Athletic Academy: The Arise Steel Athletic Academy was launched in Chennai on Thursday. The academy was launched by P Haridas, secretary, DG Vaishnav College. The academy will support all indoor sports. The academy will have branches at Coimbatore and Madurai. Children in the age group of 8 to 18 years will be identified and given free coaching. They will also be given free higher education and employment.
