Sehwag hits UK journalist over fence on Olympics tweet
Cricketer Virender Sehwag bowled over Twitterati and emerged as a match-winner for India, after his skilful display of words against a foreign journalist’s criticism of India’s celebration of Olympics winners.
New Delhi
British journalist Piers Morgan took to the micro blogging site to post sarcastic comments on India’s massive celebrations after winning two medals, a bronze and a silver, at the Rio Olympics, saying, “Country with 1.2 billion people wildly celebrates 2 losing medals. How embarrassing is that?”
Not one to shy away from an attacking over, stylish Sehwag promptly retorted, with the heart-warming tweet, “Indian cherish every small happiness.” Displaying the fighting spirit that had endeared him to millions of fans during his cricketing heydays, Sehwag added, “But England, who invented cricket, yet to win a World Cup. Embarrassing?”
Twitter reacted the way fans would have lustily cheered him on a cricket ground—there were over 5,000 retweets and 5,600 likes within two hours of Sehwag’s posting. Morgan, a respected British journalist is not someone who is afraid to flirt outside the off-stump, and retorted with a tweet saying had Kevin Pietersen been still playing, England would have won the World Cup. “Just as we won T20 WC & he was Man of Series,” he said. However, he also had the grace to acknowledge to Sehwag that England’s failure was ‘very embarrassing’.
Sehwag’s reply, again reminding one of the manner in which he used to hang back, waiting for the ball to come to him, instead of going forward to meet the line of the ball, was priceless. “KP (Kevin Pietersen) is a legend no doubt, but wasn’t he born in South Africa? And by your logic should have won 2007 World Cup.” He then again asked, “Why have problem with our problem with our people celebrating?” he asked.
India’s PV Sindhu and Sakshi Malik won two medals at the Rio Olympics which concluded on Sunday.
