Futsal should be in Olympics, says Falcao
Futsal acts as a stepping stone to football in South America and it comes as no surprise when futsal stars have created a niche for themselves in the sport. While football boasts of a Pele and a Maradona, there is possibly no bigger name in football's shorter version than Alessandro Rosa Vieira or Falcao or the ‘Pele of Futsal’.
Chennai
Currently in Chennai for the Premier Futsal, Falcao, is happy to be part of the league and believes that the tournament is just the inception of the sport in the country.Â
On his experience of playing in India
It is a pleasure to be in India and it is a different experience. I was surprised by the love the Indian fans have shown from the beginning. It is a big opportunity and I believe futsal in India will grow for sure. This is the beginning of a great sport in this great land, in this great country.
On whether futsal should be included in Olympics
Futsal is a very attractive sport because it is filled with action, skills and goals and it makes for great viewing. For this reason, futsal should do very good in the quadrennial event. But, futsal is different from football. The games are too long in football, whereas in futsal there are more goals. Most importantly, it is indoors and rain or shine one can enjoy with their family.
On friendship with NeymarÂ
Neymar is a great friend of mine. We are always talking and he knows everything about my stay in India and about Premier Futsal. Futsal has helped not only Neymar but Ronaldo, Robinho and Kaka to evolve and it is a fundamental sport back in Brazil played by all schoolkids. All these great players have played futsal and continue to do so even today for fun.Â
Should futsal be included in football curriculum
Premier Futsal is building culture, not only limited to the twin tournaments in July and January. Building an academy, putting futsal inside schools to make children become better futsallers or footballers is all in the plan. We are in talks with the directors of Premier Futsal to start building academies soon. Futsal will be more attractive for kids as they are going to be involved more in the game as they get the opportunity to score goals faster unlike football.
On whether the art of defending is lost in futsalÂ
Futsal is not direct attack but a defensive attack. It is actually contrary to popular belief. In a game of four, if one player does not mark the attack and goes ahead, the opposition will score. All futsal players defend.
