‘Indian team is in good hands under Kumble’

Former Australian bowling spearhead Glenn McGrath is no stranger to India and its conditions. By his own admission, Chennai is the second home for the former fast bowler, thanks to his stint with the MRF Pace Foundation.

After a gruelling coaching session, the lanky 46-year old shared his thoughts on Anil Kumble’s appointment, pink ball Test cricket and more.

    On Kumble as a coach:

He is a perfect fit. In my opinion, the bowlers are the smartest, especially the quicker ones. It is there for everyone to see the good work put in by Jason Gillespie, a fast bowler, as a coach. Anil is a fighter; he has the never-give-up spirit and the team is in good hands under Anil. These days coaching is all about managing – dealing with people. He knows how to handle stuff and it remains to be seen how well he can infuse the fighting spirit into the team.

On young fast bowlers who have impressed:

Varun Aaron has been working hard. He has got everything one needs to be a consistent Indian bowler. Veer Pratap Singh has come back stronger after a rough patch. Aniket Choudhary and Ankit Rajpoot have also done well.

    On pink ball cricket:

It is good that the inaugural Test in Adelaide was a success. The concept is good. It is important that Test cricket is rated and remains high in cricket. The bowlers had a little advantage in the day/night Test and there is a little bit of work to do (to attain the balance between the bat and ball).

    On his Indian stint:

I love to come back as I can see a marked improvement in a bowlers’ attitude. Their hard work impresses me. It is important that the bowlers need to realise that they need to look beyond an IPL or a Big Bash League (BBL) contract. It is good that they have put in the hard work to grab a contract but they have to realise that it takes double hard work to sustain. The young bowlers shouldn’t get carried away. It is important to note that skill can take a bowler only so far but attitude takes you farthest.
