Kvitova survives scare
Czech 10th seed Petra Kvitova survived a French Open scare to beat Danka Kovinic of Montenegro 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 to advance to the second round on Sunday.
Paris
The two-time Wimbledon champion was two points away from defeat when she trailed the world number 57 at 4-5 in the decider.
But she claimed the next three games to wrap up the win and goes on to face Taiwan’s SuWei Hsieh for a place in the last 32.
Kvitova committed 10 double faults in a typically rollercoaster display in which she led by a set and had two breaks in the second against an opponent who made the Istanbul final on clay this season.
Kyrgios sails amidst drama
Later, Nick Kyrgios scrapped his way into the second round beating Italian Marco Cecchinato in three sets.
Looking short of his absolute best form, Kyrgios needed two tiebreaks to take a 2-0 lead, before finally securing a crucial break in the third to seal the 7-6 (8/6), 7-6 (8/6), 6-4 win.
Kyrgios’s serve was as ferocious as ever, but armed with a graceful backhand, but Cecchinato refused to relent saving a number of break points throughout the match.
But when the Italian missed the chance to steal the second set tiebreak, Kyrgios pounced to set up the match.
Bad boy at it again
Kyrgios made an explosive and controversial start clashing repeatedly with experienced umpire Carlos Ramos during a tense firstround win.
Frustrated by Cecchinato, Kyrgios told Portugal’s Ramos his officiating was “bullshit, f****ing bullshit” before edging to a win.
Given a code violation by Ramos for yelling ‘towel’ at a ballboy during the first set tiebreak, Kyrgios was livid. Accusing Ramos of “incredible bias”, Kyrgios attempted to reason with the vastly experienced official - but to no avail. “A code violation for saying towel loud?” Kyrgios said.
“Now I’ve seen it all. So I go ‘towel’ louder than usual and you gonna give me an unsportsmanlike? Really? What rules am I breaking? That’s bullshit,” he added.
Local boy Paire in second round
Benoit Paire was at his enigmatic best, coming through in five sets on Suzanne-Lenglen Court to beat Moldova’s Radu Albot.
The 19th seed took the opening set in routine fashion before Albot battled back to level but Paire looked to be heading for victory when he took the third set 6-4.
However, Albot raced through the fourth 6-1 to level the match before Paire delighted the home crowd by coming through the decider for a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 victory.
