On the ball: Smalling and de Gea scoop United awards
Manchester United pair David de Gea and Chris Smalling, who attended the awards function with his girlfriend Sam Cooke, were honoured at the club’s end of season awards, while manager Louis van Gaal reflected on a tumultuous year at the helm of the club.
De Gea was named Player of the Year by the club’s supporters and Smalling scooped the Players’ Player of the Year gong. Goalkeeper De Gea has been in superb form for the Red Devils this season and has pulled off some fine saves to earn United some crucial points throughout their campaign. The Spaniard, who became the first United player to win the award three times in a row, told the club’s official website: ‘It’s an honour to receive this award again. I want to say thank you to everyone - we have some of the best fans in the world.’ The 25-year-old was close to joining Real Madrid in the summer before the deal collapsed on transfer deadline day.
