#WT20 Top players of the day: Mitchell McClenaghan and Joe Root
Here’s a brief analysis of the top players of today’s ICC World Twenty20 matches, New Zealand vs Australia and South Africa vs England
Chennai
New Zealand vs Australia
New Zealand showed yet another magnificent bowling performance with McClenaghan topping the bowling line-up with 3 wickets & 17 runs in his 3 overs
Having spun India out in Nagpur, New Zealand made one change to their side by bringing in the fast bowler Mitchell McClenaghan to replace the spinner Nathan McCullum. McClenaghan duly took 3 for 17 and played a significant role in derailing Australia's innings.
"Nice to perform like that but it was a collective performance," Mitchell McClenaghan said. "The spinners were fantastic and got us back in the game. It's nice to show some teams we can play in these conditions,” he added.
New Zealand bowled with all their might to stop Australia at 134 for 9 after making 142 for 8 at the scenic HPCA Stadium. The highlight of the Kiwi innings was a 27-ball 39 by opener Martin Guptill.
Brief scores: New Zealand 142 for 8 (Guptill 39, Elliott 27, Faulkner 2/18) beat Australia 134 for 9 (Khawaja 38, Marsh 24, McClenaghan 3/17) by eight runs
South Africa vs England
It's the second-highest T20 run-chase in history by England - a thrilling two-wicket win. It was a brave and remarkable performance by England having bowled so poorly.
"It's just nice to contribute to a game of cricket," flat-bats Joe Root said. "Be sensible, play smart cricket… and the guys were so calm under pressure. It's about staying cool and building partnerships,” he added. He picks out Jason Roy, inevitably, for making his job marginally easier.
Jason Roy started things off with a De Kockian show of timing and confidence - he set the tone, as De Kock had for South Africa. Thereafter, Root was in control and supported Buttler in a crucial partnership.
South Africa's batting line-up, was brilliant too. De Kock and Amla's opening stand of 96 came in 7.1 overs of controlled mayhem, before Duminy's 54. Both sides' bowling attacks struggled, albeit on a pitch tailor-made for hard hitting.
Brief Scores: South Africa 229 for 4 (Hashim Amla 54, Quinton De Kock 52, Adil Rashid 1/35) lost to England 230 for 8 (Joe Root 83, Jason Roy 43, Kyle Abbott 3/41)
