    Agnieska Radwanska, Serena in Semifinals

Agnieska Radwanska continued her unbeaten start to 2016 to surge into the semifinals of the Australian Open for the second time. The No.4 seed was in command from the get-go at Melbourne Park against a perplexed Carla Suarez Navarro.

    Melbourne

The duo had to recover from gruelling fourth round comebacks but it was evident Radwanska, who warmed up for the Open by claiming the Shenzhen title, was more comfortable in the heat at Rod Laver Arena.

The Pole immediately conjured her game of crafty spins, angles and varying speed to stamp her authority on the contest.

It rapidly got worse for the Spaniard as she was dragged from side to side, to the net and back as Radwanska’s all-court prowess secured a rapid 4-0 lead by virtue of 11 unforced errors for Suarez Navarro.

The serve was a particularly potent weapon for Radwanska, who made 79 per cent of first deliveries while breaking Suarez Navarro three times to storm to take the first set 6-1.

That hope evaporated early in the second set when Radwanska was gifted an instant break for a 2-0 lead.

However, Suarez Navarro’s elegant single-handed backhand and punchy forehand allowed her to edge back into the contest and level the set at 3-3 with some resolute defence.

It was Radwanska who wrestled away the initiative once again with a textbook drive volley and smart darts to the net.

    Serena too strong for Maria:

Serena Williams attacked Maria Sharapova’s strength and it helped extend her complete domination of their rivalry, earning the six-time Australian Open champion a place in the semifinals. Top-ranked Williams beat Sharapova 6-4, 6-1 in the quarterfinals, her 18th consecutive victory and 19th in 21 career meetings back to 2004.

    Fedex surges on:

Roger Federer has advanced to his 39th Grand Slam semifinal, beating Tomas Berdych 7-6 (4), 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. The No. 3-ranked Federer put on a dazzling display of footwork and shot variety against the No. 6-ranked Czech, improving his record over Berdych to 16-6. The win makes Federer the oldest man since 1979 to reach the Australian Open semifinals. The 17time Grand Slam winner is 34 years, 176 days old. Federer is bidding to win his fifth Australian Open and his first Grand Slam since 2012 Wimbledon.

    Djokovic on song:

Novak Djokovic has strolled into his sixth Australian Open semifinal, the world No.1 recapturing some of his best form in a 6-3 6-2 6-4 dismissal of Kei Nishikori in their quarterfinal on Tuesday. Djokovic banished the memories of his scratchy, error-riddled display against Gilles Simon in the fourth round with an ominous performance, and the five-time and defending Melbourne champion will play Roger Federer in the semifinals.
