Self-enquiry, the seed for happiness
Humans differ from animals in many ways, but the biggest difference and the highest blessing we alone possess is the ability to think, ‘Why am I living, and ‘Why am I born’? This isn’t a spiritually enlightening question to push one towards self-realization, it simply means that an animal never lands up in a situation where it feels unhappy about its own existence.
A tiger never wonders why the elephant is bigger and neither does the elephant wonder why it cannot eat flesh. Animals don’t compare themselves with others, thereby eliminating the very source of unhappiness. But therein lies a huge divine blessing for human beings.
Animals never go through self-enquiry because they don’t go through unhappiness. When we humans are unhappy, it is an opportunity given to us to know who we are. Because the mind doesn’t want to continue with unhappiness, it unconsciously lands up on self-enquiry without even knowing it is self-enquiry. It seeks answers to ‘Why am I living’ and ‘Why am I born’?
Being human we should feel grateful to the Divine, because by nature every human is blessed with the self-awareness of unhappiness. People seek spirituality to increase awareness without understanding this fundamental truth; you are naturally gifted with a mind that will always be aware of unhappiness, even if it isn’t aware of happiness.
With this awareness of unhappiness, it is now your responsibility not to stay unhappy. And herein lies the practical difficulty, the mind knows it is unhappy, but doesn’t know how to get out of that unhappiness and therefore convinces itself it must endure suffering.
This article will help you realize that even though you have decided that your destiny is to suffer; or your destiny is to go through a health issue, or your destiny is to go through a financial loss or your destiny is to endure the same relationship issue forever; that is not the fact. The highest transcendental truth is, ‘You are not Stuck, you can change your Destiny’. However, you must play your part in changing your destiny in the positive way you want. One must do four things and nature will gift you with everything you desire to have in life.
You create your future: Realize that one cannot change what has happened in the past, but one can change what can happen to oneself in the future. People are unhappy because they see what they don’t want to see or, don’t see what they want to see in life. Self-realization is realizing when you consciously see what you want to see in meditation you will see all you want to see in life. Above all, you do have a choice, so start seeing what you want to see, so you start seeing what you want in life.
You are the best for yourself: Despite all the loved ones you have, none can take care of you the way you can take care of yourself. If you do not realize this, you will waste time searching externally for love or for someone else to facilitate your success. This is never going to happen. These are the two fundamental truths that one must realize. Understand that only humans possess talent, animals don’t have talent, they have inborn ability which is their very nature. But for a human, learning to sing, dance or paint isn’t an inborn ability, it is a talent attained through effort.
Work on your talent: It’s common to hear older people say, “I used to sing or dance beautifully when I was younger but am unable to now”. The reason is they haven’t worked on their talent. The only thing that can shift the mind and keep you progressing in unhappy situations is to work on your talent. The Vedas say, talent and skill are worthless when not put to work. And every moment in life is worthless if one is not working on his talent.
Enjoy your talent: Despite your financial commitment, work pressure, family situation, what will keep you happy and energetic isn’t your goal or vision statement but the work you involve in that makes you feel you have talent and you are expressing that talent. It may be a small dish you cook and taste yourself, a small painting you paint and frame for yourself. It may be a song you practice and feel for yourself or a dance in the bathroom for yourself. It is your talent you express for your own joy.
This is the only thing that needs to be done from your side. Unhappiness is now never a possibility for you. Happiness will be your possession until the last moment of your breath.
Wishing you a life of Peace, Success and Happiness. Aham Brahmasmi!!
