You have to mind your brain

Humans are souls with a mind and body. In everything that we do, we need the guidance of the mind. This guidance is based on knowledge and past experiences.

The mind is considered all important, however, our organs need no instruction from the mind to function accurately. The kidneys never wait for an instruction from the mind to perform their function.

We assume supremacy of the mind, but the mind can operate well only through a well-functioning brain. All concepts of psychology, the subconscious and super-conscious mind etc., all exist only as long as one possesses a functioning brain. Your skill, knowledge and individuality can be expressed only with a well-functioning brain. The brain rules the mind. For example, imagine a brilliant doctor who has dementia. It is a fact that he is learned, experienced and was once a doctor of great skill. But at the onset of a disturbance in the brain, the once powerful and learned mind no longer functions the same.

In case of the body too, we do not possess a body, we possess a brain-instructed body. If the brain is unable to transmit neurotransmitters needed for functioning of the body organs, the body cannot function.

Your brain is the very foundation of your physical, mental and even spiritual expression. Therefore, it is one’s responsibility to consciously maintain the health of the brain. People ask me, “Guruji, I know how to maintain a healthy body, but how can I maintain a healthy brain throughout my lifetime?”

The answer is simple; first, meditation. Meditation is essential for the brain and the best exercise one can give the brain. The second important factor for brain health is natural Sleep. Sleep can be induced, but rest through natural sleep is necessary for the body to rejuvenate itself.

There are 5 functions crucial to brain health and necessary for human existence that occur during sleep. These are:

1.. Neuron pruning or detoxification of toxins from the brain. 2. Circulation of space energy which is also a requirement for the proper circulation of the other four energies; Fire, Earth, Air and Water in the body. 3. Rapid Eye Movement (REM) during which dreaming happens. 4. Total paralysis of muscles and 5. Secretion of HGH or Human Growth Hormone.

Of the above; the last three functions can be achieved through medication; however, detoxification for the brain and circulation of space energy are only possible in natural sleep. Hence natural sleep is a must.

Apart from having a healthy body and mind, one can connect with the divine too only with a properly functioning brain. Once this connection is established, it is the responsibility of the divine to keep the brain in proper function so it can be express itself through that soul.

Wishing you a life of health, peace and happiness. Aham Brahmasmi!!
