The minister was much moved to see the pain in the king’s eyes and said, “Do not worry your Majesty, I will find your ring immediately.” In a few minutes the minister said aloud, “Your Majesty I know that the ring is here in this court and it is with one of the courtiers who has a few strands of straw in his beard.”
The courtier who had stolen the emperor’s ring was scared and involuntarily moved his hand over his beard. The minister being shrewd noticed it and pointing towards the courtier ordered: “Please search this man, you will find the lost ring.” The king was impressed with the minister’s intelligence and asked him how he had managed to find out the culprit.
To this the minister answered that a guilty person is always scared and his actions arising out of that feeling always gives away the truth.
