Resolutions are decisions we make for our own betterment or progress. But have you ever thought of how you make a resolution or a decision? It’s a myth that we make our decisions based on our experience. As per Manoshastra, the subtle reality is that our experiences are based on our decisions. We normally wait for an experience so that we can take a decision. Here the decision is based on knowledge. But I’d like to reinforce this, in reality, your experience is waiting for you to take a decision to be experienced by your experience.

Decisions we make as resolutions are made out of influence or intention. But we do not realise this difference. Now one needs to consciously think, ‘is this decision I have made, made out of my own intention or someone else’s influence?’

It is human nature to be influenced by another; it could be one’s spouse, parents, past friends or any relationship one relates to with the heart. And this influence could be either positive or negative. If the influence is positive one can continue with it for one’s own betterment; however if the influence is negative one should take all the effort to eradicate it from the mind. This is the only way to keep yourself away from negative experiences you don’t want to experience.

You as a person have no responsibility towards yourself or others. Reflect on this, everything that’s happening to you, is happening on its own. For eg., your breathing, digestion, blood circulation etc. need no attention or effort from you. Likewise, the earth revolves and the sea does not cross its shores, with no effort from you. Then what are you responsible for? In reality you are responsible for nothing but your own experiences.

To bring a positive transformation in life, we will decide from now on that ‘the experience I want will be decided by me alone and no one else in the world, including my family, society, friends etc. This very decision will make you a positive source for unfailing positive experiences for yourself and others in any given situation. Because in this state, you are no more a mere human but a divine soul. The Vedas say, one who is responsible for his own experiences and is a source of positive experiences for himself and other is called a Swamiji.

This new year take a resolution to be not just a human but a divine being until your last breath. Wishing you and your family a very happy new year filled with health, peace and prosperity.
