Ultimate object of every religion is exploration of truth, says historian Prof B Sheik Ali

The former vice- chancellor of Mangalore University, expressing his concern over the rise in religious fundamentalism, terrorism, intolerance, violence, distrust and hostilities, said that everyone should understand that the ultimate objective of every religion is exploration of truth.

Speaking at the 'National Symposium on Interfaith Dialogue' organised by UGC-Human Resource Development Centre (UGC-HRDC) in association with National Foundation for Communal Harmony (NFCH), Prof Ali said that all religions propagate peace, harmony and happiness of human life.

Ramakrishna Ashrama, Mysuru, president Muktidanandaji in his address said, "Humans have founded religion for exploring truth. What is important is that one should understand religion properly and this is a rather difficult task."

Pointing out that one should not get emotionally tied up in the process of understanding religion, the Swamiji said that such symposiums offers an insight into the central human and spiritual concerns of different religious faiths.

Stressing on the need for strengthening the sense of unity in diversity amongst the citizens of the country, Muktidanandaji observed that it was important to understand the contribution of all religions in promoting peace and harmony.

Rev Dr Thomas A Vazhapilly, Bishop of Mysuru, in his address said that that the progress and happiness of any country is intertwined with peace and harmonious existence of the society.

The Bishop asserted that in a multi-faith, multi-religions and multi-cultural country like India, respecting each others faith and value systems is especially important as the country is marching towards growth and sustainable development for all.

About 300 delegates, students, Research scholars, teachers, members of the civil society, NGOs, religious establishments took part in the day long symposium.
