Wild bear captured by foresters in Tirunelveli

TIRUNELVELI: A bear that had attacked farmers and triggered fear in areas near Thirukurungudi in Tirunelveli district was trapped in an iron cage by the forest department and later released safely into the forest, officials said on Monday.

In December, the bear attacked Murugan (57), a farmer from Vattakulam, causing serious injuries. On January 8, Thangapushpam (65), the wife of Raj from the same locality, was injured in another attack.

Following sustained demands from farmers, the forest department decided to capture the animal.

After being examined by a team of veterinarians, the bear was released safely into the Kalakad forest range.
