COIMBATORE: A migrant worker died and another injured after a tanker exploded while they were involved in fabrication works in Coimbatore on Wednesday.

Police identified the deceased as H Vakil, 38 and injured as T Ravi, 18, both hailing from Uttar Pradesh, and they were employed in a fabrication workshop owned by M Shanmugam, 5 at Bodipalayam near Malumichampatti.

Police said one Karthikeyan from Podanur bought a tanker, which was used to transport furnace oil, and wanted it to be modified into a water tanker and left it at the fabrication unit on Tuesday night. He was into the water supply business.

On Wednesday morning, Vakil and Ravi took the modification works in the tanker. As they couldn’t open a valve, the duo used a gas cutter to cut it open. However, the tanker exploded and went up in flames.

In the impact of the mishap, Vakil died on the spot, while Ravi survived with injuries. The body of the deceased was sent for a post mortem at Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH), while the injured person has been admitted in the same hospital for treatment. His condition is said to be stable.

On receiving information, the fire and rescue personnel from Kinathukadavu station arrived and doused the fire. The Madukarai police have registered a case and further inquiries are on.
