THANJAVUR: Thanjavur Cyber Crime police registered a case on Wednesday against the unidentified persons for cheating a farmer of Rs 12.50 lakh through a fake RTO mobile App.

Three months ago, Abdul (50), a farmer from Thanjavur, was fined by the traffic police for helmet violation. However, Abdul failed to pay the fine.

However, Abdul recently received a message from the Transport Department to pay a sum of Rs 1,188 as a fine. He failed to pay the fine for the second time.

In such a backdrop, Abdul stumbled upon an RTO Challan Traffic Fine Mobile App shared in a WhatsApp group, and he downloaded the RTO Challan APK shared in the group to pay the fine.

Subsequently, he also shared his personal details and bank account details on the link.

On February 2, he received a message stating that a sum of Rs 2 lakh was debited from his account. Soon, he realised that online scamsters had hacked his account and he was duped of Rs 2 lakh. He was planning to approach the police with a formal complaint.

However, by the time he took action, a sum of Rs 12.50 lakh was debited from his account, much to his shock. Abdul immediately passed on the information to the bank, which blocked the transaction.

On Wednesday, Abdul lodged a complaint with the Cyber Crime Police, who registered a case and are investigating further.
