COIMBATORE: The Dharapuram police have registered a case against Leader of Opposition and DMK youth wing secretary Udhayanidhi Stalin for allegedly engaging a minor boy in an election campaign, in violation of the Election Commission guidelines.

While addressing a gathering from a campaign vehicle near the Periyar statue on the Dharapuram-Udumalpet Road on Saturday, Udhayanidhi had a boy brought onto the vehicle.

The boy also made disparaging remarks against Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay while seeking votes for the DMK. A video of the incident subsequently circulated on social media, following which TVK functionaries lodged a complaint with the Dharapuram police and election officials.

Following this, the police registered a case against Udhayanidhi under provisions relating to the violation of election guidelines prohibiting political parties and candidates from involving children in election campaigns. An inquiry is under way.
