As part of Tamil Nadu Urban Care Project, supported by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the government hospitals will get an upgrade and tower blocks will be constructed on the hospital premises.
The construction of tower block at Government Coimbatore Medical College will be undertaken at a cost of Rs 110 crore, while Government Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital and Government Rajaji Hospital will be executed at a cost of Rs 135 crore and Rs 121 crore respectively.
The officials with the Directorate of Medical Education said that the procurement of the contractors and workers for the project will be done through the Public Works Department (PWD). The PWD will be following the JICA guidelines for the infrastructure development at the hospitals that will include International Competitive Bidding to ensure that the high scale infrastructure development is carried in the best way.
“The constructions, including the civil works, maintenance and supervision of the buildings will be headed by PWD Department. The state health department has sanctioned the amount for initiating the process, while JICA will be reimbursing the whole amount excluding the taxes,” said the official.
The Tamil Nadu Urban Care Project also includes strengthening referral and secondary care hospitals, intensifying hospital management through automation, and providing primary health care for the treatment of non-communicable diseases.
