Police sources said that AIADMK branch secretary Sasikumar (40) has constructed the two-storeyed house at Okarai village near Thuraiyur. His brother Ilayakumar (38) has been living in the first floor while Sasikumar occupied the ground floor of the building. Nobody was living on the second floor of the building.

On Monday, the people of Okarai arranged for a religious event at the Mariamman temple. Most of the residents of the village and the members of the house were on the streets for the festival while Sasikumar was sleeping alone at the house. There was a sudden explosion at the house of Sasikumar and the building collapsed in seconds trapping him in the resultant debris.

The residents hearing the explosion ran towards the house and they were shocked to see the entire house in shambles and Sasikumar with burn injuries screaming for help. The villagers rescued him and rushed the AIADMK functionary to Thuraiyur Government Hospital.

But he succumbed in the afternoon. In the impact of the explosion, the houses of his neighbours Nagalingam, Jothivel, Viswanathan and Manimaran were also heavily damaged. Police suspect the cause to be a leakage from the gas cylinder. However, the RDO Janaki and DSP Selvam who inspected the spot ordered for a detailed investigation.
