NILGIRIS: The Dolphins Nose viewpoint in the Nilgiris has been reopened to tourists from Monday after remaining closed for three months for maintenance work, the Forest Department said.
The viewpoint, which falls under the Coonoor forest range, was shut from September 12 to carry out renovation works, including upgrades to pathways, toilets and installation of safety railings.
With most of the work now completed, tourists are being permitted to visit the spot, Coonoor forest ranger Ravindranath said.
Dolphins Nose is a popular natural viewpoint located about 12 km from Coonoor and is maintained by the Forest Department. It is a regular stop for tourists visiting Sims Park and other nearby attractions.
From the viewpoint, visitors can see the plains of Mettupalayam, Sirumugai and Karamadai, along with the Bhavani river winding through the region.
The low-hanging clouds near the viewpoint are a major draw, with more than 100 tourists visiting daily on average.
The access road to the viewpoint was recently relaid after nearly 20 years, following which the Forest Department decided to take up maintenance works at the site.
