CHENNAI: The monthly assessment under Targeted Help for Improving Remediation and Academic Nurturing (THIRAN) for students from classes 6 to 9 commenced across State-run schools on Wednesday. The exams are conducted for Tamil, English and Mathematics subjects.

For February, the exams will be conducted on February 25-27 for the same subjects.

Selected students from each school have been picked to achieve the basic learning outcomes and earlier an exam was also conducted based on that. Around 68% of students passed the exam. “However, students who have achieved the learning outcome were directed to practice with the THIRAN practice book until the full-year exam, as they need additional time to be thorough with subjects,” said an official.

After Tamil, English and mathematics, exams will also be science and social science. “This is being done to strengthen the basics of students in classes 6-9. Before they appear for the board exam, they should have a strong foundation and to keep track of their progress, a monthly assessment and scoring is also done,” added the official.

THIRAN was implemented to improve language proficiency and mathematical skills of students studying in government middle, high and higher secondary schools from classes 6-9. Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin launched THIRAN along with TN School Programme for AI, Robotics and Knowledge of Online Tools (TN SPARK) in July 2025.
