Under the trimester pattern, an academic year has been divided into three terms and colourful textbooks for each term have been developed and supplied to students without compromising on content and competency.
With this, the burden of textbooks has been substantially reduced and learning has also become easier for the students. The School Education Department’s initiative came against the backdrop of a series of appeals from stakeholders.
A senior official from the Directorate of School Education told DT Next that following the request from teachers’ association and parents, authorities are currently working out the pros and cons for its implementation.
“Most parents and teachers feel that after completion of Class 8 in the trimester system, students suddenly feel pressured to study subjects in their entirety in Class 9,” the official pointed out. The official also said since Class 10 students already have the board exams, all possibilities need to be thought out before the system is implemented.
According to the official, the government is also contemplating introducing the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) system for high school students as has been done for Classes 1 to 8. The new evaluation system will help in smooth transition from rote learning to application-based approach. Under CCE, each child is comprehensively evaluated in scholastic as well as in co-scholastic dimensions continuously throughout the year.
