CHENNAI: PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss has accused the DMK government of gross financial mismanagement, questioning the utilisation of massive borrowings made over the last four years.

In a statement, Anbumani said the DMK government borrowed Rs 3.86 lakh crore between May 2021 and March 2025, but spent only Rs 1.66 lakh crore on capital expenditure, raising serious doubts about the remaining Rs 2.20 lakh crore.

Citing Reserve Bank of India data, Anbumani said the DMK had projected that loans were taken solely for infrastructure development, but official figures exposed this as false. He alleged that borrowed funds were diverted to meet routine revenue expenses, such as salaries and freebies, due to persistent revenue deficits.

Comparing Tamil Nadu with Uttar Pradesh, Anbumani claimed the latter achieved higher capital expenditure with lower borrowing through better fiscal discipline. He demanded that the Tamil Nadu government learn from Uttar Pradesh. He warned that soaring debt has pushed annual interest payments to Rs 70,754 crore and said voters would punish the DMK for burdening every family with debt.
