Earlier, Thoothukudi police filed a total of nine cases against Vanchinathan, who is a coordinator of ‘Makkal Urimai Paathukaappu Maiyam’ and lawyer in connection with anti-Sterlite protests. On June 20, he was arrested at Chennai airport by Thoothukudi police.

After the arrest, his wife Nandhini moved the High Court, filing a petition objecting to police cases against him. She raised fears about charges made against him and attempts to book him under the National Security Act and sought the intervention of a Judge for releasing him on bail. In connection with the prayer, the court appealed to the Thoothukudi police to maintain status quo and not to file any further case against Vanchinathan.

When a petition filed by Vanchinathan was heard, Justice GR Swaminathan granted him conditional bail and instructed the petitioner to stay in Madurai and not to participate in any such protest in Thoothukudi and appear before the court if summoned.
