A flood alert has been issued to downstream villages located along the river banks as a precautionary measure. Water level in the dam had crossed 116 feet as against its full reservoir capacity of 120 feet on Monday.
The dam reached its FRL during the bountiful South West monsoon last year. Similarly, heavy rain brought by the SW monsoon over the last two months had also led to an increase in inflowinto the dam.
“Due to rains in the catchment areas, upper Aliyar and Kadambarai dams have got filled up. Hence, the surplus water from there also flows into the Aliyar dam,” said a PWD official.
At 8am on Monday, the inflow into the dam stood at 546 cusecs while 59 cusecs of water is released from the dam for drinking water purposes. A ten-member team of PWD staff has taken up vehicle patrolling on the dam banks.
A flood alert has been issued to people living in low-lying villages asking them to move to safer regions in view of the dam being filled up fast. Aliyar dam irrigates about 6,400 acres under old Ayacut area and 44,000 acres under new Ayacut areas.
Further, water from the dam also fulfils the drinking water requirements in parts of Coimbatore. Meanwhile, the Mettur dam, which reached its full reservoir level on October 23, continued to hold full capacity of 120 feet on Monday.
