Erode East bypoll: Karnataka woman’s nomination rejected due to non-registration

ERODE: Following opposition from three independents, the poll authorities rejected the nomination of a woman candidate from Bengaluru to contest Erode (East) bypolls, as she was not a registered voter in Tamil Nadu.
Therefore, the number of contestants in the fray has been revised to 46 from 47. Highlighting that V Padmavathi was not a registered voter in Tamil Nadu, three independents K Padmarajan, A Noor Muhammed, and Agni Aalvar raised an issue over Padmavathi contesting the Erode bypolls.
The issue came up after Returning Officer and Corporation Commissioner N Manish declared the final list of candidates contesting the bypolls following the scrutiny process and withdrawal of nominations. Eventually, the Election Commission (EC) rejected her nomination and the final revised list was released around 1.30 am.
Meanwhile, B Senthil Murugan, the former joint secretary of AIADMK’s MGR youth wing in Erode, joined DMK in the presence of Minister for Housing and Urban Development S Muthusamy, on Tuesday. Recently, Edappadi K Palaniswami expelled him from the party for filing a nomination to contest the by-polls. He withdrew his nomination on Monday.
Returning Officer N Manish said that postal voting for the electorate above the age of 85 and persons with disabilities will commence on Thursday. Election staff distributed Form 12 D and a total of 209 elderly people and 47 differently abled have expressed willingness to cast their postal vote. Multiple teams of the election wing will visit them on 24, 25, and 27 January to collect the post-ballot in the presence of representatives from political parties.
