CHENNAI: The Election Commission of India (ECI) in the State has received over 13.38 lakh filled-out forms, issued for name inclusion, change of address or deletion of duplicate entries, as part of the drive to complete the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), after erasing 97 lakh voters from the draft rolls, published recently.
Over 9.89 lakh forms for name inclusion alone have been received to date. Even as the poll panel is yet to receive 18% of the forms issued so far, it eyes crossing 15 lakh forms in the State under the three categories.
A whopping 82% of the filled-out electoral forms prescribed for name inclusion and deletion in the voter list have been successfully received, thanks to special camps conducted over four days, ever since the claims and objections period began on December 19, the EC said.
The poll panel received an overwhelming response for the special weekend camps conducted on December 27 and 28, and January 3 and 4. The reception was better in districts such as Coimbatore, Madurai, Cuddalore, and Chengalpattu, though the capital city, Chennai, lagged.
"The weekend camps have been very helpful for the public, especially in urbanised districts. A total of 13.38 lakh forms, including 9.89 lakh forms for name inclusion, have been received through these camps. We expect this number to reach 15 lakh by the last date for claims and objections on January 18," ECI officials said.
