The members, assembling at Alagiripuram on the Cauvery bed where sewage has been mixing with the Kollidam river, started performing the yagam meant to provide the State government with “rational thinking”. They also condemned the official apathy over the water contamination in the river. They said that they had submitted several petitions with officials to prevent the mixing of sewage with the river, which posed a health hazard and made the river turn into a breeding point for mosquitoes. Since the officials failed to act, the members attempted to perform the yagam, they said.
Meanwhile, upon information, the Srirangam police rushed to the spot and held talks with the agitating youth. The police then told them to disperse from the spot immediately, but the DYFI members argued stating that they were planning to perform yagam on a par with the Ministers who did the same a few days ago. However, the police refused to relent.
Meanwhile, Corporation officials also rushed to the spot and held talks with the agitating union members. The officials then assured them that action would be initiated to prevent the sewage mixing with the river, upon which the members dispersed from the spot.
